Trips of a Lifetime

By Dhani Jones on May 18, 2009 6:40 PM | Permalink | 73 Comments

I suppose I've touched on every subject there is, everything from sharks to uncomfortable situations - water, falling off horses. Needless to say it's been an exciting adventure and I can't wait to get started again. The range of places, the people I've encountered, have created a special place in my heart. I even have a small attachment, maybe an adoration for the increasing amount of insects I've either eaten or been bitten by. Yet there is one thing that I haven't really discussed ...weather.

So, our journeys, as you've seen, began in Thailand where you could literally eat the heat off of the floor. The heat consumed every ounce of fat that remained on my body. Then, we continued on to the Swiss Alps during the summer time and the weather there was quite mild but there were those days when it fluctuated. Hell, on top of the mountain snowboarding I wore shorts.

On to Singapore, Spain, England (during the spring), Ireland, Cambodia, Australia (hot as hell.com) and New Zealand (I cant wait to go back, TNZ). The weather continued to be quite amazing and I never was so happy in my life. Then, we landed in St. Petersburg, Russia, Mother Russia as they call it; it's home to those with no fear, no pain and a ton of Vodka. I'd like to call it, the Ice Country.

As soon as we touched the ground, I swear I could feel the cold outside even though the doors to the plane were closed. We stepped out into the winter wonderland, and ice developed in my nostrils and my breath became shallow. I had to bring so many warm clothes that my overweight bag fees were over a thousand dollars. I reckon it wasn't an inexpensive trip. But besides the cold weather and the no pain, no fear and tons of Vodka, the Russians received me in their dojo and I became one of them. Alex and Steve, both my coaches, found my fighting spirit and allowed me to develop my skills in the art of Sambo and that was all it took to warm my spirit. And sometimes, that's all you need.

Dhani- you have inspired me to travel. I've had my passport for quite some time. I think I need to be about the business of obtaining a few "stamps'. Thanks for sharing. ;)

    Dhani,
I’m saddened that this is the season finale of “Dhani Tackles the Globe.” I didn’t start watching until the Australia episode, but I haven’t missed any since. Like most people, I didn’t know who you were before the show and was really apprehensive about watching in the first place. I just happened to be channel surfing when I ran across the show, but was hooked instantly.

I echo what other have said. You were so personable and really a joy to watch. As you know, most professional athletes give the profession a bad name; so it’s quite refreshing to have someone like yourself show a different face of the profession. Also, I’m proud to say that I’m finally going to buy my very first jersey (yeah) and it’ll be #57 of the Bengals and I’ll wear it proudly too.

Lastly, Have you given any thought to designing other things except just ties? I think you have “a bit” (lol) …. 2 eyes for fashion and you wear your suits well. Why not make your own? What do you think about building the Dhani Jones Empire/Legacy? I think it would be great. Don’t forget about the ladies though. Make sure we have a few sexy pieces in the Dhani Jones collection. I for one would be saying: you go boy. My personal philosophy is, get it while the getting is good

Be blessed in all of your future endeavors. Hope to see you doing something else real soon. Maybe another season of Dhani Tackles the Globe? I pray that you prosper and succeed at whatever it is that you set out to do.

Nic- Sorry for writing a book

Beautiful show, one of the only good shows left! You have certainly given us the dream of being somewhere else, to explore the unknown. You have lived the life my man, keep going, we will see you at your next adventure!

Hey Dhani, this is the greatest show on TV! You are the perfect person to host this show; great sense of humor, style, and most of all you know how to represent yourself and America. If every American that traveled abroad acted as you do with great humility and respect for culture, maybe we would not be looked upon as arrogant cowboys. Plus the fact you hold your own in every competition is a testament to your ability as an athlete and that americans can learn and hang with the best!

    Dhani,
My fiance and I both love sports and actually enjoy watching your show together. It is a great "escape" for me being a stay-at-home mom and one on the way, to dream of places I would love to take my family one day. Non-typical places as well, Russia??? However, my fiance is a promoter for MMA fights and my 8yr old trains in MMA as well, so the Russian sport of Sambo was a learning experience for my whole family. I also, must say it is very nice to see how well you are accepted as a American man to the places you visit. Your show not only inspires my family, it has already inspired my mother...I talk about the show all the time, and I got on her case because she has worked for American Airlines for over 15yrs and she has never been on any other continent...so she took her first trip by herself to Austrailia for a whole week!! I couldn't believe it!! Anyway, I hope you come back next season with many more interesting places!! I think by next season my fiance will have his six pack back...you have inspired him to get back in the gym!! THANKS!!! We both need that encouragement! :)

    Take care!

Dhani, I have enjoy viewing your program, I am also from California and am glad that the travel channel has finally chosen a 'Californian' to carry out a show.I am, at the moment literally watching your episode on 'Ruska (Russia)', very interesting my I add, I am confident that you will do well with this program and wish you the best of luck, personally I believe that your show is a success. Dhani, I thought WWE was fake until I saw your show. I fought in all of the styles you have and I know you DO get hurt. I'm sure you're fit, but even then taking a punch or a kick to the body does hurt. But it seems you're like some Superman and you can take it or the instructor aren't that good. I hope next season you take on some REALLY fighters. Like someone from the MMA. Good luck.

    My Man Dhani,

I am so proud of you.
When I first heard about you doing the show, I wasn't a bit surprised. Your spirit and personality always shown brightly on and off the field, especially in Philadelphia with the Eagles Team.

I started watching the show a bit later on in the season, but from what I have seen so far, it is refreshing and makes one want to travel abroad more often.

I hear the show will be coming to an end soon. But I wish you much continued success in your next projects in the future. I predict, movies, reality shows, commercials, fitness training, and possibly a sexy spread in some womens magazine in the near future..lol.

But anyway man. Stay in touch.

    Love, Peace and Happiness Always.

Dhani, the show was amazing and i love the scene where you had on that golf shirt(wife beater) doing pull ups. You really do have a great body. I would really be upset except for the fact that i recorded every show so i can catch you whenever i want. I can't wait till next season. You'll have one!;)Words of advice for next season though, DON'T WEAR THAT CASTRO SHIRT & DO WEAR SOME MICHIGAN SHIRTS. Make everyone happy. For me just being on this time and having a second season so that i don't have to struggle to find you on the field is enough for me. I don't need much to be happy. Seeing you half naked was always a plus also.=) Take care Dhani Jones. I hope to see you soon;)CK

    Dhani,

I don't really like pro athletes off the field/court and I didn't even know who you were before I saw this show for the first time. Your show is awesome, I like you attitude and comments during the show. I like that you drink and eat with the locals and go places where they've never seen a brother or heard of the NFL. YOU THE MAN! We are gonna keep watching you strong here in Dallas TEXAS. Keep up the good work.

    Dear Dhani,

Thank you so much for a great season of "Dhani Tackles the Globe." It's a pleasure to watch you travel and play with such genuine joy and curiosity. It's even more of a pleasure to see you represent your sport and your country with good humor, sincerity, courtesy, and grace. You treat your fellow sportsmen around the world with warmth and respect, and you should be applauded for it.

Your show is fresh, inventive, funny, and wonderful, and I'll be rooting for a second season.

I wish you happiness, health, and balm for your many bruises.

    Hi Dhani,
I love, love, love your show....I'm a sucker for most travel shows, but I think your show is showing another side the general population hasn't seen. Plus, I've been traveling around the globe like a maniac since I was 21 y/o and I haven't met too many other Ameicans with a deep passion for globe trotting or collecting international stamps lol....I'm off to Australia in two days I hope I have as good a time as you did:)

I'm looking forward to next season!!!

    Dhani,

You have done so much for the US with this show--not only do you showcase the amazing things that happen around the world, you embody the love of sport that is one of the best things about pro atheletes. You have been a great ambassador for the US and for football, I have come to respect and admire your ability to persevere in difficult circumstances. I know you will have a great career when you retire from the NFL, whatever you decide to do at that point in your life.

Thank you for doing such a wonderful show.

    Hello Dhani,

I think I became a fan of yours when you made your appearance on the Colbert Report. You were playing for the Eagles at the time. Just to let you know I'm a Chicago Bears fan. I thought hmmmmm there must be something to this guy. The bookers at Colbert Report doesn't often book athletes on the show. Your appearances on NFL network were always funny as well.

I gotta say I love the show and I hope the travel channel gives you more places to try sport. It's nice to see you show you are fully committed to taking on each sport even if it's out of your comfort zone. I suppose it beats OTA's eh?

My Brother is a Bengals fan and I keep urging him to watch whenever he has time. He's hoping you help contribute to a playoff appearance. But you are fun to watch. You're the only show I DVR and I can't wait to watch the moment i get home from work on Mondays.

    Dhani,
Love this series! You put a great spin on travel. Right up there with the Amazing Race. I love to travel and learn, so thanks for teaching me this season! Added bonus you went to many of my favorite places. New Zealand is a blast. Next time you will have to show more of this country. I would also reccomend Rwanda and Zambia. Great to see a Brotha out there.

    Dhani,
I don't normally post or read blogs but was moved to do so after watching your show for the first time a few weeks ago. It was your Cambodia trip and I was very impressed by the nature of the show and the insight and reflection given regarding the people, culture, the true fabric of a soceity as well as the sport. I have a background in international affairs and it is great to see the human side not just politics of a country documented in such as fashion as your show. I travel often and I always make sure that I immerse myself in the culture because it is easy to focus only on your job related interest and not understand the society and what makes them 'tick'. Enjoy the experience. The documentary is a great resource.

Dhani, I've really enjoyed watching your shows and how well athletes from around the world seem to form into a brotherhood. I've followed your career when I first heard you do the Jim Rome show and was intrigued by your first show in Thailand. All Hail the Bow-Tie Revolution!!!

I’ve just so happen to check into the Travel Channel to learn more about Dhani, and I am alarmed to learn that last night was your last episode.

Dhani, you have an awesome spirit, humble and loving with humanity. You have the perfect personality for the show! I became a fan when I first saw the show, and have watched you every since. I was fortune to travel to Switzerland and witness that gorgeous lake in the city of Burns. Please let us know how we can support the efforts of a second season.

Anyways, I really hope you read this because I truly want to join your show, I would love to travel the world and experience it through my own eyes. So from one sport enthusiast to another....please take me along haha.

I look forward to the show's return for a second season and I wish you and the bengals much luck for you football season. Although I am a die hard Colts fan. I also have love for the bengals. Much love to you and best wishes, stay safe.

    Dhani,
My husband and I reside just outside of Philly. We loved watching you play for the Eagles. We happend upon your show by accident and now we can NOT get enough of it. You are visiting places we'd never go to and seeing new cultures through your eyes. The England episode was the abslout greastest. We liked to see you learn Rugby and we loved watching you fall off the horse. That has to be the funniest thing that I've seen in a long time. Every time I mention it to my husband we both begin to laugh. Keep up the good work. It is a great show and look forward to watching you in the future. (P.S. We even watch the reruns that we've already seen because we can't get enough.)

But, being a real woman, I must say that the Speedo, massages, and workout segments are my absolute favorites. Thanks for keeping us entertained and educating us on the real world. It is an absolute pleasure watching you.

NOOOOOOOO DHANI!!!! The last episode???? I wasn't ready to say goodbye just yet. You were my Monday night delight LOL
I thoroughly enjoyed you and as an African American female, I was proud to see TV show one of many intelligent, articulate, SEXY AS HELL, cultured, humorous African American males. You did such an excellent job keeping me entertained. I hope that this will not be the last that we will see of you. Do you need a co-host next time, b/c a sister is down! LOL God bless!

I'm a huge football fan and found out about your show just before the first episode when you talked about it on the NFL network with Rich. I'm can't say how glad I am that I caught the whole season. I'm a GA boy and Falcons fan but I've always been a fan of yours with your endless collection of bow tie's and poetry. You really did represent the US well both athletically and with your humility.

I can't wait until next season and will (forcefully if I have to lol) sit my wife and daughter down to watch the show with me next season.

    Great show!

    Dhani,
Man, I'm a little blown away by the number of people affected by you and your show. Somehow I thought it was just me. Your personality, physical attributes, and sense of humor have been combined into a great show. Secondly, your ability to relate to so many others regardless of culture, color, or language is inspiring. Your show has been a social encourager and an inspiration to me as a black man. Keep up the good work. I look forward to following you this upcoming season as well as I hope a renewed television program as well...

    Joy - May 28 2009 @ 10:34 am

    Dahni,
For people like me who can't afford the luxury of traveling around the world your show is inspiring. Before this my favorite show was Amazing Race but competitions amongst Americans didn't really bring out the best out of everyone and their attitudes toward other cultures. I love how when you train for their sports, you give it your all. I have always wanted to see an American football player play Rugby. By the way you did great. I'm so sad that I only got to see the show via online. I read about it in small article in a magazine. As a American it's great to see how you interact with other cultures and the physical nature of their sports. As an African American women, it's refreshing to see a positive representation of a athlete. Sports and music gives us the gift of setting aside our diffrences and focus on our humanity. It's cool to see it done in a informal setting. Unfotunately, it seems that they will not be renewing the show but I truly believe your at the start of something good here and hope that you continue to enlighten us about the sports of other countries. For one I didn't realized how much we as Americans idolize our athletes. Keep up the good work!

Hey Dhani, I just want to say that I am very sad that the season has ended. I just hope and pray that there will be further seasons. They picked the perfect person to host this show. You are personable, funny, athletic, adventurous and respectful. You take on every adventure with an open mind and embrace it. You have mad me a fan of the cincinnati bengals. I would love to hang out with you and taste some of that vodka you had in Russia. Good luck with everything and I can't wait for next season.

Mr. Jones, I must say that it was extremely refreshing to experience a confident man in all his glory. You worked your show!! As a previous responder stated, I too believe you should consider a clothing line, particularly swim wear. Brotha you woe (not wore) the..... out of those trunks in the Australian episode. Halleglory!!! Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see what you have lined up for us next season. Be blessed and safe on the field this football season. Love ya

It was a rather unexpected surprise for me to find that your first season had ended so soon. May 25th was truly a sad day for me, nonetheless I look forward to Season Two.

Dhani, like many gay men I'm not a big professional sports fan, so I must admit I hadn't heard of you until I saw the commericials for your show on the Travel Channel. So, I mean, let's be frank, my main reason for tuning in wasn't to see an American football player attempt all the different sports from around the world. I tuned in because of the incredibly handsome and charming star that immediately jumped off the screen. I only saw my first episode yesterday, and it was the one when you were in Russia learning Soma. The only thing I will mention is how at the end the coach said he loved you, and not only that, he went out of his way to say he didn't just like you, but in the short time you'd been there, he'd grown to love you. I'm not the least surprised he felt that way. Not only did you give it your all in your efforts to learn the sport, but throughout the program you showed what a charming, funny, and thoughtful person you are. I'm sure the Russians weren't concerned with your looks, but for me, all those wonderful personality traits combined with that tremendously handsome face, that heart-stopping smile, and that amazing physique, made me barely able to keep from falling out of my chair! Whoever raised you did an impeccable job. What a terrific man you are. What a joy it is to watch you. I hope there are more episodes of your show to come. If so, I'll be there.

I am a very competitive person and demand the best from myself. I also love to travel and learn from other cultures. put everything I love together and "voila" there is your show. you made every place you visited fun but at the same time we could see how much you were working for every event. I love you tenacity , desired of being the best you could be and your love for just life. Thanks for a great season, cant wait for the next one. You are awesome!

    Dhani,
Thank you very much for what you've done in "Dhani Tackles the Globe."
You have managed to single-handedly eclipse the bad publicity the NFL often gets by the actions of personalities such as Michael Vick, Pac-Man Jones and T.O.
You show sports fans around the globe that humility, respect and appreciation for other cultures are dignified qualities to have. You carry yourself in a genuine manner showing great appetite for knowledge and culture while visiting amazing places and engaging the audience all along. Your show is very fresh an extremely constructive to young audiences.
Hope you get the opportunity to do many more seasons. All the best from a Bears fan.

    Dhani,

My wife and I love your show! We've taped and watched ALL of your travels, and are saddened that the season has already ended :( We figured that you have to return to the Bengals training camp for the 2009-2010 football season.

More power to you! I too will buy a and wear your #57 Bengals jersey!

Dhani, Come back! Monday nights are o-v-e-r without you and your show. Truly looked forward to it, told all to watch. An unexpected and total pleasure and learning experience. Have traveled, lived and worked in Europe and the Middle East, done international studies, so have been fish out of water, studied and thought a lot about self / other, and found your show exceptional - beautiful, entertaining and un-self-consciously intellectual, totally and sincerely engaged in cultural discovery, immersion, understanding. Especially loved episodes in Cambodia (it seemed you totally immersed, subsumed yourself in a very different culture and the intense but sort of gentle - despite the fighting - vibe there - very intense and beautiful watch!); in the Basque country - perfectly evoked the different-ness of the place for me - that's how it looks and feels); and in Switzerland, though in a painful way there, because it seemed you had to weather palpable racism, and you did it with incredible strength (and probably undeserved generosity toward some of the people). The open-heartedness and open-mindness with which you approach the world is lovely and heartening to see (and quite rare, I think), and of course the shows are great fun as well! Also beautifully shot, especially again the Cambodia episode. Well done to you and your team! And please do more!! Something in the Arab World? Would love to see you take down (in your own special way!) some of the misconceptions about people there. Sorry so long - don't write in TV show blogs, but your show drew a long and glowing commentary out of me!!

    Dhani #57,
Your show is the only one I plan to watch... not a huge TV person, but have become a big 'Tackles the Globe' fan. As a history teacher and football coach I appreciate a sportsman willing to challenge himself both on the field and off. Keep up the hard hitting and fun loving, we enjoy each Monday night. Also, keep trying, eventually you'll land one of those girls you try so hard to attract.
Its just a shame that you play for the Bengirls and not a real ball club like my Cowboys! But I'll be pulling for you this football season and looking forward to next the 'DTG' season. (Hey - get the Travel Channel to run some reruns... I'll watch them).

    Good morning Dhani!

Just want to tell you how much we enjoy watching your show on a Sunday morning. My boyfriend and I are also avid travelers. Will you be traveling to the family reunion this summer? We do hope that you will find some time in your busy travel and training schedule to attend. Although we have never met, through your show and family, we feel we already know you. Take care.

Dhani, I love your show and have watched every one. My favorite was England, the Rugby, match, how quiet it got, the drinking afterwards. The Austrailian show looked a bit harry sitting sideways in the yacht -yikes, that Vodka looked good too, the match in sawdust in Switzerland., you getting spanked in russian steam room., lol., pls come back!!

Yes, I hope there is a season two. You did mention in your introduction about the Philippines. Well, I hope you get the chance to visit there and I strongly recommend you climb Mt. Pinatubo which is still an active and sleeping volcano that errupted in the 90's. As for the sports to compete with, there are plenty of traditional martial arts of the Filipino. I also must mentioned that World Boxing Pound for Pound Champion is there to. I would love to tour you around but I'm planning to head back again March '10. Regardless, I hope there is a Season 2.

Dhani, I first noticed you when you played for the Eagles. I was very interested in your show when I first heard about it and it didn't disappoint. I love your enthusiam, intelligence, your respect for the places and people that you encountered and yes, your amazing looks. I also have to say that it's especially great to see a Black man being so open to the world and all of it's opportunities. I hope that there will not only be a 2nd season but many seasons thereafter.

    Peace,
    Michelle M

WOW. I just discovered your show recently, and I LOVE IT! I watch very little t.v. - usually watching some old movie I Tivo'd off of TCM or something or PBS, but your show is fantastic! And you, Dhani, are one of the sexiest men I have ever seen! :) I would eat any bugs you asked me to! Ha ha... I sincerely do wish you much success in all of your endeavors, including, um, what was it you do again? Oh yes, football! :) If you are EVER in Detroit, Chicago or Cleveland speaking, let me know please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I must admit, when I first turned to the Travel Channel while looking to view one of the quirky, funny food/travel shows, I was shocked to see a black man hosting anything on that channel. When I first saw you, I just assumed (unfairly) that you would be this arrogant, self-centered, "big-headed" man because you were so fine (i.e., incredibly gorgeous, muscular, brown-skinned thing) and a football star. After just a few minutes of viewing your show, I was so ashamed of my initial reaction because it couldn't have been further from the truth. I was SO impressed with your intelligence, humility, athleticism, charm, humor and wit. I fell in love with your show right on the spot. I loved how you introduced me to a whole new world - new people, new cultures, new sports - and did it with such finese that when your show ended for the day, I scrambled through the TV guide to find out when your show would be on again. You have really stumbled on to something wonderful in this show. I love your passion for each and every sport that you tried (even when you didn't do so well at it). Your competitive drive didn't overshadow your respect for all the other athletes, though. I was, and still am, so impressed with your show. Dhani, you are a true gentleman, a true athlete and a true professional. I am missing you (I mean your show) very much right now, so I hope that the powers-that-be are listening and realize that there are a lot of fans who really want to see your show - the reruns as well as new episodes. Keep up the GREAT work and I truly hope to see your show in the line up again very soon.

Wishing you many more wonderful Blessings,
    Mitzi

Ugh, Dhani withdrawal...it's so hard isn't it?! I hope you have a great season, Go Browns...wuf wuf, but honestly, I really want you to pack your bags and head out again. Can one of us come along? Fo' real, I am not playin' here! Pick ME! I'll eat your bugs, man! LOL

Oops, sorry,I meant Cinci Bengals! Can I get a pass on that for being an Ohioan? Columbus is saturated by Buckeye football news, I get our pro teams confused, plus the whole orange thing, so much orange! Couldn't the Browns use a different accent color? :0) Peace & Love

I hope that the Travel Channel chooses to have another series of Dhani Tackles The Globe. I know that the show is physically and mentally demanding for you personally, but the rewards are infinite. Sport in society has replaced initiations and war as the true measure of manhood, and character in the modern world. Seen in the context of the various traditions and cultures it gives us information and reveals secrets that other travel show would normally pass over. It would be a real pitty and a tremendous loss if the show only ran for one season.

echo what other have said.

SEASON 2!! SEASON 2!! SEASON 2!! I sincerely hope there is a season 2! Your show is one of the most enjoyable, watchable fresh shows. My sons love it that you learn the sport of another culture, and the customs that go along with it. It shows respect. You are classy, humble, charming, handsome. You visit another country as a stranger and end up being part of the family by the time you leave. I hope your show inspired more young black men to explore the world. I know my sons will! Peace, love and joy for new discoveries! SEASON 2!!! SEASON 2!!
