Schwingen in Switzerland

By Dhani Jones on March 18, 2009 1:50 PM | Permalink | 75 Comments

Ever felt unsure about a place? Have you ever arrived in a country, driven to a city and thought to yourself, what am I doing here? Now, most people would think that when going into a third-world country - A place where extreme poverty infused the streets and "everything" was for sale. But for me, it was Switzerland, a country where there are more banks per person and enough fondue to feed the world (I could not confirm either of those last two statements). Now I'm not knocking the country or the sport of Schwingen (Swiss wrestling). I'm just saying it was a bit different trying to break into a sport where I'm not sure they really wanted any outsiders learning.

I tried my best as I always do to be non-judgmental about a situation or an experience that I have. But there was one day in Hasliberg where I was upset. Now I've been upset before but this was a little bit more. More to the point where I pushed myself to prove a point that regardless of how mad you make me, I'll still survive, and I might even sneak one in on you. It was an open practice, I believe the second of the trip, and I knew nothing of Schwingen. I did know wrestling, and I knew how to hold on to someone, I just didn't know how to hold on to someone and wrestle at the same time.

We walked into the gym, entered the sawdust pit, and I commenced to be taught by an incredible teacher while my coach watched. At the end of the practice we had "schwing offs," sort of a man in the middle. The twist was I was the only one in the middle, I didn't start that way but I ended up that way. I wrestled eight guys, back to back, to back, to back. I know, crazy.  By the time the fifth one came around, I had the look of anger only one can describe if they have ever felt so decimated that only anger is what you have to bring you back. I was cursing and screaming in my mind all the while my face told the story. I took down several guys and I even got a shot in on the champion, who turned out to be a good friend. I was pissed, but I lived through it. It was just one of those moments when I thought they didn't want me there. But what I soon realized, they only wanted to see how committed I was to learning the sport. So, what's a little hazing, some extra fuel to be successful in life?

I entered the Hasliberg, Schwingfest and placed 26 (far down in the list), but I won a bell. I actually won the respect of the people by making it to the final round, and that was more important to me. Winning will take you a long ways, but respect will carry you to the grave.

wow you have hit home ... this is a true sport and schwingers in CH take it VERY seriously.... as you found out. They keep track of the 'outsiders' and watch them closely. No one wants to be beat, especially by a foreigner. We traveled to Switzerland 3 years ago and partake in the sport here in the states... it is great fun being a spectator. My son will be traveling to CH next month and wrestling in as many fests as he can...

Dhani, great show so far, love your blog. My husband works in Switzerland several times a year. It is my favorite place to visit (so far). It don't think you have seen the entire country-some places are more friendly than others. I found it to be the easiest, most comfortable place to be myself (but then I wasn't trying to get into wrestling!) I do hope you enjoyed something during your visit.

Wow!! I caught the Thailand show today--it was amazing!! To be honest, it's kind of nice to see a black person visiting these places and to see how they are received. I've been watching the Travel Channel many years--I've always wondered, when seeing Sam Brown and Tony traveling to all these place--what if the host was black, would he be as welcomed? Dhani, you are so fine and personable!! It's hard to see any country not welcoming you!!! Good job--keep doing your thing! I hope the show just keeps getting better!!

Wow..Im watching the Thailand show as i type. It is so great to see a Black show Host on the Travel Channel. As an African American myself ,i just recently became a certified scuba diver. I plan to make a living at it, in the near future maybe a shop or teaching. what-ever, its refreshing to see someone of color enjoying the rest of the world.

That is incredibly cool that you went to Switzerland and learned schwingen. I have personally been schwingen for 16 years (since I was 5 years old). I actually help coach at my club in Washington state. We have many Swiss clubs along the west coast that hold schwingfests every year. Feel free to contact me if you would like to know more about schwingen here in the states!

You people are seriously saying his show is good because he is black? I like the show, but some of you people need to grow up. You should judge a show based on it's concept and quality not if the host is a black man or a white man.

    Dhani,
You are a fine addition to the already fine stable of Travel Channel personnel. I have to say that you crack me up every time. When you were eating the bumblebees my family and I had to exit to the bathrooms. Man that cracked us up. You combine some attitude of get it done with what the hell, that is just unbelievable. Keep it up, because you are showing the world some of the American variety that they have been missing out on. Maybe you can hook up with Bridget, Anthony, Samantha and Andrew for some interesting convo soon.

It would make for great TV between the personalities. Keep up with the show. It is fun, entertaining and a great way to see other cultures through sport. Anytime you need an out of shape thinning bald white guy to tag along or just be fodder on the show let me know. LMAO. Thouroghly enjoyable, wife loves it too. Take care. Dhani, I love your show to pieces! You keep my eyes glued to the television! I always wondered what it would be like to have an African American's perspective on a travel show. I must say you are doing an excellent job. The dedication that you put into learning these sports is awesome. I am so proud of the determination that you put forth. Some of our youth could definitely learn from that. Well, keep up the excellent work and I will be watching you every Monday night!

Wow, I've found my new favorite Monday night show. Dhani you had me laughing throughout the show. Very personable! Was very pleased to find out, after a little research, that you're from the area... Churchill? I'm at Magruder. Can't wait for the next show to see you play Rugby in England. It's an exciting game to watch. Good luck and thanks for keeping it real.

Dhani Jones, You have put together a fantastic show. Bravo !!! You were so on the money depicting some of the Swiss ethos that is generated by the people and their culture. If you were that accurate in Switzerland (which I know pretty well) then I believe you will be accurate again in places of which I have no knowledge. Thanks for a beautifully produced show as well. Your show has a look that is really unique, deep and saturated. Keep up the good work. PS you are one of the best representatives for the NFL that I have ever seen. They should be compensating you for the work you are doing.

    coop - March 24 2009 @ 12:14 pm

I thought this was an interesting show, for the fact that it was like watching 2 totally different people in Switzerland. Initially, I loved the good nature and humor that Dhani had--getting out and experiencing people on the street and in shops, etc. When it came to the schwinging competition, he morphed into a highly competitive athlete and all the laughs were gone. I think this must be because he's a professional athlete who takes competition seriously--and he doesn't want to get injured, of course. It was just interesting to me that his demeanor changed so drastically. Interesting also that Travel Channel decided to show him getting angry with the officials at the competition. Not judging one way or another, I just thought it was pretty compelling tv. Did he act like a jerk, or was he disrespected? I don't know... but I'll keep watching.

    James - March 24 2009 @ 12:18 pm

I would like to comment on the latest episode on Switzerland. I loved the show up until the last part where you said the Swiss were cheating. You showed that you are a bad sport and a very sore loser. I think you got your hopes up when they said you would win a match. You practiced for 7 days. Those guys have been doing that since they were little. I think you owe an apology for how you acted.

And for all of you other people putting the Swiss down, that is very rude and racist. They were very hospitable to him. Switzerland is a very diverse and international country. You make it seem like this is the first African American they have seen in their life. Like another posted stated "Grow Up!".

  33. 33
    Co Do - March 24 2009 @ 1:07 pm

I could tell there were a few times where you were a bit irked in Switzerland! Like you said though, I think it was more of a hazing thing than anything. Looking forward to your next show. I LOVED the first two.

I LOVE your show! As far as the haters on this page, what's good about your show is that you are honest and you keep it real. I like that you show your true emotions. It's inspiring to see how seriously and respectfully you take on these sports. It's refreshing (and moving) to see how candidly you show your humiliation and embarrassment when you get beat. And it's hilarious when you show your humorous side. Keep up the good work and keep it real!

Thank you so much for giving people a real person to watch. I enjoy your charisma. I am glad to see someone from a major sport being a good role model not just for kids but for the entire population. I love seeing a man show varied emotions not just the tough exterior. Thanks for the poetry. I would love to see these places you visit through not only your words but through your eyes (metaphorically of course). Maybe there could be a spot on the TC website where you could post favorite picts that you have taken at each place you visit? Just a thought. Thank you for being entertaining.

    Props 4 Bow-Tie Guy - March 24 2009 @ 2:47 pm

I'd like to add my own thoughts to the insightful comments from coop.

The beauty and joy of this show stems from the duality of the tourist and the competitor being the same likeable person, Dhani Jones. Dhani immerses himself and shares with us some local culture and his efforts to learn and compete in the local sports. You can see and hear the respect the people working with him each week have for his effort, ability, and attitude.

In Thailand, Dhani is preparing for his boxing match and experiencing some of the local culture: visiting a temple, enjoying some insect snacks, and the highlight of his cultural adventure for me was when he gets into the cab and asks to see some ‘night life’ and he genuinely seems surprised when he winds up in the ‘red-light’ district. But, he rolls with the idea and strolls along the street. He hears some woman saying ‘she loves him.’ and he walks over and asks ‘how she can love him when she doesn’t even know him’. He is then grabbed by 2 women and they try to escort him away and he has to break free and tells them ‘he is in training’.

In Switzerland, Dhani is preparing to Schwingen and he enjoys some of the local culture: shopping for clothes, snow boarding, swimming in the river, and my favorite was his cow milking adventure where he utters the line of the show. I think he was robbed on his second match because his left shoulder looked clean. He was able to advance to the next round and he did receive some positive energy from the crowd which told me that regardless of Dhani’s reaction to the earlier match they still had respect for his presence in the competition. He was ultimately beaten by a competitor with much more experience, but, he did nothing to diminish the respect for his effort.

It really is a phenomenally fun show. Dhani has great energy and it comes through during what seems to be a mostly spontaneous journey. I am looking forward to his trip to England next week. Cheery-O Dhani! I’ve been a fan since I saw you on the NFL Network with your mom and if your going somewhere I call ‘shotgun’, but, I must draw the line at wearing a bow-tie. ;-)

    Jon - March 24 2009 @ 3:28 pm

The Swiss episode was pretty weak, especially when compared to Thailand. I don't know the schedule of future shows but it does not take a genius to figure out that the Swiss as well as other Central/Northern Europeans are not known for "personality" or friendliness. I hope they stay away from Northern Europe for future shows. What were they thinking going to a boring place like Switzerland? The show never had a chance. Go got places like Brazil, Cuba, Spain, India where the people live live and there is a lot of exotic atmosphere and the shows will stay on the level of the 1st episode

  39. 39
    James - March 24 2009 @ 4:04 pm

    Jon,

On one hand I agree there could have been more wrestling shown. I have taught and been in Martial Arts for over 30 years, and I know that Schwingen is a very hard sport because I have done it myself.

You say the Swiss are not known for their friendliness, and that is where you are SO wrong. Switzerland is VERY well know for having friendly people, and being friendly to tourists. If not, then people would not go back! Doesn't take a genius to figure that out... I have been there many times and actually thought they are TOO friendly. Switzerland is not boring at all. They mainly showed the mountain people's lives. Theres other parts of Switzerland, and plus you have to remember this is a very small country. So if it was so boring to you, blame the show for editing it badly. You compared it to Thailand which is totally different. Mountains/Alps to tropical rainforest. Come on! Switzerland has been a top destination vacation spot in both the summer and winter. So they must be doing something right... Have you ever been there?

    PTY - March 24 2009 @ 7:30 pm

    Dhani,
Man, I know how you feel! I lived and work in Switzerland for one year. Feel your pain still today( I still travel there and have friends there). I start my conversation with everybody, Switzerland is a great place to visit. I lived in the Luzern which is the 4th largest city (150,000) I can tell you many cities in the US that are more than 150,000 people. Swiss people can make you feel welcomed or terrible bad, like you have disrespected their oldest relative.
Your last statements in the show hit home. Long story short. Swiss love tourist and they will treat you well but if you are trying to live there and our trying to fit in; it best to surround yourself with Swiss people that travel vs. the swiss that do not leave the Alps..... The Italian side of Switzerland would have been easier. Also, Zurich would have made you feel like you were in a big city. Bern is so wonderful but it does not feel like Chicago or New York or Miami. I TRULY enjoyed that show, few people realized the challenge that is to submerge into a different culture rather than just visiting hot spots and the tourist areas. Brilliant!!!!!

    Dhani,
So far so good. We enjoyed Schwingen in Switzerland. Brought back fond memories of a trip there long ago. But of course we really liked the Muay Thai Boxing. It was great to see you and Tim walk into the ring together. Thanks for that. Continued success.

Wow. It's interesting to see how you are treated when you go to different places and try to embrace different people and cultures. Here you are coming in trying to learn their craft and you're thinking that their just trying to team up on the 'foreign' guy when in reality, they were just trying to get in your head and see where it was at. So in the process of you trying to prove something, they were trying to prove something to you. Ah the ways of the world and the people in it. Brilliant show, can't wait to see more!

Your a true gentalman and a great competitor. My three boys eat you up and can't stop with the questions about your episodes.....so feel free to swing by the house for some "true" Q&A when your back to Cincy....and yes we'll cook you some protien (steak)....no fondue here!
    Keep up the great work!

    Alisa - March 25 2009 @ 4:14 pm

PTY and James-I agree with both of you posts. My husband works in Switzerland for months at a time. We live in an apartment there while he is working. As I am not really a 'tourist' I feel people are super friendly to me. It is not easy making long term friends at all, but I can easily meet dozens of people in a day just out doing errands.
We live in Montreux part of the time, which is a very nice resort town on Lake Geneva, with a great view of France.
I am always very respectful and polite-this is not my home country. I think Dhani was not terribly polite at times and needs to learn a few things about visiting other cultures.

Why are people calling Switzerland boring??? Have you actually been there and been bored. Well ok then, you have your opinion. If you are calling Switz boring and have never stepped foot in the country-don't base your opinion on one highly edited travel show. Switzerland is far from boring!!! It is my favorite country on the planet. You can also easily hop on a train and go to Paris or Italy for not much $$. Nope, not boring. I can't wait to get back there myself.

    2 words: Bhutan archery.
An exotic location that we are rarely allowed to see.

Very entertaining show. Well done Dhani, and the Travel Channel for coming up with the concept. I do not know Dhani "the football player" (never heard of you until now), but Dhani "the traveler" really makes a sincere effort to celebrate the interesting things about each culture and to master the sport in which he will compete, and that is why I watch the show. I pray that you continue to be blessed in all your future career choices.

Great episode Dhani. I love it when I'm out of my "comfort zone", sure you do too. My only complaint is you should watch your profanity. H*ll, Sh*t, D*mn are all OK but GD, MF, and F**k should NOT be on the show! (Bleeps or not).

You are not in the locker room anymore. You are touring the world and such hardcore profanity only reinforces the movie version of the black stereotype.

Clean up your vocabulary and you will have a better show for it.

    Hey Dhani,
I just noticed this blog section here. I read what you said about Switzerland. I agree. It was only the second show, but i did not like it. I pick up on stuff really quickly and you could tell that they really did treat you cold. The practices were'nt much either. Mr. Pitts really took up time with you and worked with you to make sure you knew what you were getting yourself into once in the ring. You hate i was using a few choice words right along with you. They were all kinds of bull feathers =). i hope it's better for you in England. I'm telling all my friends, co-workers, cousins, etc to watch. I am really enjoying the chance to get to see you and not have to search for you on the field. Plus no helmet is an added bonus. This is the one with the horse right? I'm not going to be able to take it. BUT i'll be watching Hey! what's one more cringe. Right! Take care Dhani Jones. CK

Your show is pretty darn hilarious...I laugh through most of it because, whether you know it or not, you have a very good sense of humor.
I've only managed to catch the Thailand show but am looking forward to future episodes (umm...I can't believe that you ate roasted crickets!!)lol Anyway, given your comments about feeling as if the Swiss didn't want you there, I'll make sure to see the Switzerland show. Like others, vicariously through your experiences, I'm learning a lot about sport in other cultures...something, beyond soccer, that I actually hadn't given much thought to. However, thus far your show is a reminder that, at the end of the day, human beings are essentially the same. That is, the spirit to compete seems universal as well as the need to just feel a part of something and have something to cheer about. Anyway, all of the pop sports psychology aside, I'm really enjoying the show. My hope is that you'll eventually join some of the West Indians in a friendly game of cricket rather than eat them! lol
Vegetarians unite! :) Keep up the great work.
    Peace---Veronica

Dhani - I've caught both the Thailand and Switzerland shows. You're an entertaining person and I've enjoyed watching you interact with the locals. It's interesting to watch your intensity change on "game-day". Your a fun loving, free spirit up until the time you go into competition. Great show.

Dhani Jones is a good man. I have seen two episodes, and I am impressed. He has fun, shows respect, and displays great character. He is a natural athlete and television personality. I'm an old fat white guy, but I realized long ago that no one gets to choose their parents' color. We only get to make choices with what we have been given. Dhani Jones has worked hard to be the player and personality he is today. I think he is a good man, and I can't wait to see his next adventure. Jones' committed competitiveness makes this show work. I love it. It's like he's one of my kids who makes me proud of him.

The Swiss were cold towards you, no doubt about it. Loved seeing you milk and clean up after the cows!

This is a great show, Dhani is a fantstic embassador under darn tough working circumstances. The mixture of pride and testosterone makes playing another mans sport a very difficult task. I can't wait for Monday evening!

HI, DHANI LOVE YOU SHOW AND YOUR SPIRIT. AS A DARK SKIN LATIN WOMEN I UNDERSTAND WHY YOU WERE FRUSTRATED IN SWITZERLAND, THE WAY THE LOOK AT YOU, SPOKE TO YOU AND BEHAVE DURING THE COMPETITION WAS A CLEAR SIGN OF PREJUDICE. THIS IS THEIR SPORT AND THEIR COUNTRY AND YOU WERE REPECTFUL TOWARDS BOTH OF THEM. I ADMIRED YOUR PERSEVERANCE AND DESIRE TO LEARN, HAVe A GOOD TIME AND GIVE PEOPLE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT.

My Man you make me proud like our new President, and that is no matter what sterotype people have put us in, you have showed them that they may not really know us. You are usually the only person, but your persona and style doesnt change. If the food is nasty, you tell them, and if its good you tell them. You seem to be very comfortable in your skin, even to the way you wear your hair (your own styl) I have checked out your ties on your website, and will be purchasing your bow tie, just hope I can learn how to tie it! Keep on doing what youre doing I wish I were you, what a great way to see this world, while you are youg, and got it going on. and the other good part is that it is all on tape, and your childrend and their children and so on, will always be able to see, the true man that you are.

Good Show!!! Schwingen remindes me of Sumo!!! Maybe you should visit Japan and try your hand at Sumo. I'm from hawaii and there are recently 3 sumo wrestlers from here. They were very popular in Japan. I think you will be suprised at even though hot big they are, they are so flexable and in top condition. If not, you can just visit Hawaii and try surfing which was inventd here and not Australia. or try some ancent Hawaiian sports.

    Dhani,
Great to see someone bring the national sport of Switzerland to television. There are groups of swiss clubs along the western united states and canada that are made up of swiss immigrants and decendents where Schwingen is still taught. There are about 10 to 12 Schwingfests up and down the west coast each year. We'd love to have you up to Tacoma, WA and there is one in the Imperial Valley not too far from San Diego if you still feel the need to Scwhing.
